Dear Glen Morris United Church,

May the peace of Christ be with you! This past Sunday, Glen Morris United Church had the delight of welcoming participants from the Climate Motivators Program, a summer internship for young climate activists in the church. Run by The United Church of Canada, youth from across the country have come together to work on a climate justice project related to a personal passion of theirs in partnership with a sponsoring community of faith. These Climate Motivators will be spending their week at Five Oaks Retreat Centre before returning to their communities to continue their amazing work.

As someone who connected with Rev Alana, the minister to the Go! Project, this past spring to create a youth retreat focused on ecological justice it has been wonderful to continue being involved with the youth programming offered by The United Church of Canada. We are very fortunate to be so close to Five Oaks which is a hub for many exciting things happening in terms of spirituality-based programming and events.

The Climate Motivators are not just program participants but interns meaning they are getting paid and have summer jobs as students. This means youth don’t have to choose between a summer job and being involved with the church and that the programs are more accessible to people of different economic backgrounds. I hope that in the future we can have youth connected to Glen Morris United Church participate in these wonderful opportunities! If you know any youth and/or young adults that are passionate about climate justice please keep them in mind or let me know!

This Friday (today!), my partner Johnny and I spent more time with the Climate Motivators teaching a basket weaving workshop. Working with willow is a wonderful way to be creative, get in touch with nature, and build community - we’re happy we get to share it with this awesome group of people!

Yours in Christ,

Rev Michiko
