Faithful Footprints Retrofit Energy Grant

$30,000 has been granted from the United Church of Canada to help make our Church more energy efficient. The Church had to guarantee 50% in matching funds bringing the total to $45,000.  A portion of the $15,000 needed, was provided in memory of Mary Sharp who requested that the money be used to improve the Sanctuary.  The balance of the funds has been raised through private donations.  The work to be done will include the following:

Upgrading the electrical panel to a 200-amp service,
Adding insulation above the Sanctuary, the upstairs storage room, and the Robson Community Room to create an R60 factor,
Installing LED pot lights and controllers in the Sanctuary and the Sunday School / Storage Area,
Replacing the ceiling fans in the Sanctuary with two energy efficient fans,
Sealing the vent openings in the Stained Glass Windows in the Sanctuary,
Adding dimmer switches to the Robson Community Room lights,
Replacing two aging oil furnaces with two air-to-air heat pumps with propane backup,
Replacing the electric hot water tank with a tankless on-demand hot water system,
Replacing the basement door with an insulated exterior door.

Our goal is to cut our electricity and heating costs in half thereby reducing our carbon footprint.  This work is to begin this fall.

Phase 3 Construction

The Expansion and Accessibility Committee (commonly known as the Reno Committee) has been busy finalizing plans to construct the new fully accessible 750 sq. ft. Vestibule and Office addition.  Hoskin Construction has been selected as the successful Contractor and work is expected to begin in October.

It was suggested by a donor that the Vestibule be named the “Heritage Room” to acknowledge that our Church sits on traditional native territory and also to recognize the European heritage of early settlers.

The Heritage Room will provide a transition area allowing the building to host mobility impaired individuals safely and comfortably.  This new entrance will bring our structure in full conformance with accessibility standards.  It will provide a safe, dry, and accessible entrance to the Church Sanctuary as well as to the Robson Community Room and the Certified Kitchen.  The Office at the west end of the Heritage Room will provide a much-needed personal workspace for our Minister and will double as a small meeting room.

Phase 3 Construction Plans

 Construction plans will include:

Planting 2 trees in the cemetery to replace the 2 trees that will need to be removed,
A new roof over the Robson Community Room that connects to the roof of the addition,
Hydronic in-floor heating,
Concrete flooring with a smooth finish that includes a painted labyrinth,
Operable casement windows in white vinyl,
Stone façade on the south wall up to the windowsills and then vinyl siding above,
Brick on the west wall similar to the existing brick,
A 38” aluminum commercial door at the main entrance with power operation,
R12 insulation on the Office wall and a small window in the Office door,
Wifi and telephone wiring to the Office,
New storage cupboards and a permanent setting for the Sunday School area,
A Custodian Closet and storage cupboards for other miscellaneous items.

How Can You Help?

The estimated cost of this project is $200,000.  Major fundraising is ongoing to try to cover this cost.  Meanwhile, a loan for $200,000 has been secured through the Waterloo Presbytery Extension Council.  The interest rate over 15 years is low and we pay interest only on the amount we borrow.

$16,100 was received from a Brant County Municipal Grant to help cover the cost of an automatic door opener at the main entrance to the Heritage Room and to address other accessibility issues.

We need your financial support!  With the Church closed for months due to the pandemic, normal monthly income has been drastically reduced.  But there are many ways to help support these renovations.

A Giving Tree placed on the Office wall will be one of the first things you see when entering the Heritage Room.  “Leaves” of gold, silver, and bronze will have names of all who make financial contributions.  A “Stone” at the base of the tree may be donated in memory of a deceased family member.  A brief summary of each deceased person will be outlined on an In Memoriam page on the Church website.

PAR (Pre-Authorized Remittance) allows you to support the Church or Renovations through automatic monthly withdrawal from your bank account.  This provides regular givings even if you are away.  To register, contact John Graham at jgraham1215@rogers.com.

A Renovations Fund Pledge Sheet is available to commit to giving an affordable amount on a monthly or annual basis for up to five years.  Of course, your pledge can be changed at any time.  Pledges can help our Treasurer, John Graham, plan for the future.  A printable pledge sheet has been attached at the bottom of this page or contact John for a copy.  Members of the Reno Committee have collectively pledged to give a total of $400 a month for five years.

Any donation large or small is most welcome.  E-transfers can be made directly to the Church account at jdgraham1215@rogers.com (note the “d” in this address).  No password is needed.  Mail cheques to the Glen Morris United Church, 453 East River Road, Glen Morris, ON N0B 1W0.  Donations of $20 or more will receive an income tax receipt.

 THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
